Receiving corpus amounts of praise from the likes of the prestigious Q Magazine, NME and resident Radio 1 music guru Zane Lowe, releasing their debut album The Days War to the world, and topping an October UK tour, dubbed ‘The Big Cheese Tour’, in association with Big Cheese Magazine… Life currently isn’t too shabby for the ‘Doom-Pop’ quintet Lonely The Brave, is it?
On the eleventh date of their extensive UK tour, Lonely The Brave set up camp at the O2 Academy2 Newcastle Upon-Tyne on Tuesday 14th 2014. With support in the form of Leeds ruffians Allusondrugs and 2014’s festival favourites, the in-your-face alternative rock Marmozets; the crowd of students looking for an alternative night away from The Diamond Strip, and the older generation poised to scream every line in a shattering pitch, were treated to a night of raw energy, total surprise and – most importantly – a promising show of sleek sophistication.
Commanding the eyes of the intimate venue to be fixated upon them; the five lads from Cambridge, foreseen to eventually become the “biggest band on the planet”, successfully proved their legacy, by hurling head-first through a spell-binding setlist. Opening tracks ‘Call of Horses’ and ‘Victory Line’ left the crowd startled, through the vivid passion coursing through complex guitar lines, while tracks such as ‘Kings Of The Mountain’ and ‘Deserter’; the latter serving up an ardent vocal wrapped in sentiment, allowed Lonely The Brave to prove why they’re head-and-shoulders above the rest.
‘Black Saucers’ and penultimate track, the gleaming soul of Lonely The Brave, ‘The Blue, The Green’ were both met with deafening applause and rallying woops from the burly Geordie crowd. With praise modestly being soaked up by the band, Mark Trotter (guitarist for Lonely The Brave) once again thanked the punters with a beaming smile, before launching into final track ‘Backroads’.
Ending the night on an ultimate high, salutes and sheer pleasure radiated from the stage as the Cambridge boys exited door left. As the fans of this brilliant band made their way home from O2 Academy2 on that cold Tuesday night, it was clear that only one thought was embedding itself into everybody’s mind: this band is the definition of the future.
