LIVE: Ward Thomas – The Globe, Cardiff 02.04.15

The globe is one of the best live music venues in Cardiff, despite being a pain in the arse to get to. People crammed into the tiny venue, even perched on the dodgy old staircase, to see Ward Thomas glide through short but sweet set, last Thursday night.

Their set consisted of bubbly bass lines and outstanding vocals, which the crowd loved every single second of. They gave off this montage feeling of Fleetwood Mac, Bob Dylan with a big dash of proper country. And when I say “proper country”, I mean they sound nothing like all of this Taylor Swift bull that we’re exposed to.

The girls were perfectly synced, and their harmonies blew me away, everything was spot on. The duo really know how to work a crowd; confident with an almost childlike charm.

Their new song ‘Carry Me Home’ was played for the first time in the tiny Globe. Opening with a light piano part that is masked by outstanding vocals, leaving Carrie totally exposed, there’s no two ways about it – these girls can sing.

‘A Town Called Ugly’ was the highlight of the set for me, driven by a sturdy, funky bass line and accompanied by more outstanding vocals, and topped off with a Yardbirds-like guitar solo.

The girls returned to the stage to an encore that they just couldn’t refuse, to round off an amazing set with a cover of Neil Diamond’s ‘Sweet Caroline’, which can only ever result in a sing along. Forget lighters, we had cans of red stripe waving in the air (heart warming, I know). What a way to round off your first UK tour.
