New Track: Dalton – ‘What Never Should End’

With 23rd February seeing the release of his self-titled debut album, American ‘dreamer’ Dalton presents us with latest track ‘What Never Should End’.

Travelling round the USA – currently settled in LA – Dalton (A.K.A Nate Harar), has a rather unique sound. He describes it himself as “no frills… stripped down and unapologetic”; this is definitely clear in ‘What Never Should End’. Stripped down, however, should never be confused with simple – whilst there is a definite simplicity and naturalistic approach to the songwriting, this is no boring track. It’s full of contradiction as the shimmering melodies are underlined with the aggression of the guitar.

Don’t be fooled by Harar’s puppy-dog eyes, however. Despite his image, this isn’t yet another singer-songwriter, attempting the same old thing with an acoustic guitar. He’s punchy, his voice just as raw as the guitars, and there’s a welcome aggression to the track: he achieves ‘angsty’ without sounding like just another moany, disaffected musician – something which many seem to struggle with.

One thing Dalton doesn’t sound, however, is American – he wouldn’t be at all out of place (coincidentally) in the likes of Dalston and Shoreditch. It’s effortlessly cool, rather ironically so; Nate doesn’t see himself adopting the rock ‘n’ roll image anytime soon. His apparent modesty translates itself into the track, the melodies and emotion: the entire thing just seems so real. Something, which in times where musicians are often far too self-aware, is more than welcome.

Dalton’s debut album is out 23rd February via Fierce Panda. Pre-order it here.
