New Track: Heyrocco – ‘Elsewhere’

With the sudden rise in tattoo chokers and the likes, it’s clear the 90s is making its way back into fashion; but we suggest you ditch the chokers and go about 90s nostalgia the right way. But what is the right way? ‘Disney-grunge’ band Heyrocco, that’s what.

No, Disney-grunge is not a new genre that has totally passed you by, but it is how the South Carolina trio describe themselves. The band are Nate Merli (vocals and guitar), Christopher Cool (bass), and Taco Cooper (drums) and, as well as having collectively the best names ever, they’re bursting onto the scene with their track ‘Elsewhere’. It’s already made it to the main playlist on Danielle Perry’s XFM evening show, and been spun by Phil Taggart at Radio 1; it’s only a matter of time before it’s an indie club night classic.

Heyrocco combine the much-loved angst of Nirvana with the sparky nonchalance of Blur and Pavement to create the coolest blend of 90s nostalgia there is. Heyrocco, alone, could replace the entire soundtrack to 10 Things I Hate About You.

“I don’t know where the harm is, in staying for just one hour / I’ll have you home before your family’s heads get sour” sings Merli, a true representation of the teenage-angst these guys are making cool, only heightening their likeness to Blur with almost excessive but still welcome ‘oohs’ clouding the backing.

Bright-eyed and floppy haired, these guys are bounding onto the scene, and we should all be very excited about it.

‘Elsewhere’ is out 23rd February, via Vital Music Group. Pre-order here.
