NEW TRACK: John Joseph Brill – ‘Muscle & Bone’

Liverpool’s John Joseph Brill has released a new track track, ‘Muscle & Bone’. An immense, moody anthem, it’s filled with a bitterness and angst to rival Kurt Cobain. With a voice as big as his beard, Brill’s lazy vocals play effortlessly over the turbulent instruments underneath, until the climatic refrain of Just because I don’t cry, doesn’t mean I don’t grieve”, sees his voice rise to the occasion.

The whimsical feel to the tune never fades, with a rocking drum beat that indicates from the start that something is brewing. Indeed, this song has more atmosphere than the storm it unwittingly resembles, echoing the menacing experience of the calm before the storm. Brill’s constant references to the naturalness of being human (“I’m just muscle and bone”) – mixed with the anguish and the ultimately exultant conclusion – is projected through his remarkable voice, which becomes a tidal wave of emotion.

It’s easy to gather the feeling that Brill knows what he’s talking about, and this tune can resonate with anyone who’s ever felt a little bit battered by life. A big, swooping track, John Joseph Brill has melancholia down to a pat.
