R&B soulstress Naomi Pilgrim asks for a helping hand in more ways than one with new single ‘Racist Friend’.
A cover of The Specials’ classic, it may seem bleak that a song released in 1984 with the lyrics ‘if you have a racist friend, now is the time for your friendship to end‘ is still relevant, but such is the shitstorm of 2017, that the message is now needed as much as it ever was.
With slick beats from Swedish producer Embee and vicious verses from Sa-Roc and Yugen Blakrok, Pilgrim’s soulful reworking is the perfect update which the prescient original deserves.
Speaking about the track, Naomi says: “Have you ever found yourself in a situation where you felt the need to act, but instead you looked the other way? As long as we’re hiding within our comfort zone, keeping our mouth shut, we’re not going to have an equal society and that’s the message of this song.
“Silence enables the growing hate and that’s why racism, sexism and discrimination needs to be addressed at all times. Speak up! You’re needed. We must fight for equality every single day. Let’s stick together.”
