New Track: Oh Sister – ‘For The Dales’

While I write, girls are having a bit of a moment in the music world. With the release of numerous biographies from some of rocks greatest women, and the success of the likes of Wolf Alice and Laura Marling, women are proving that they are more than capable of owning the spotlight.

Oh Sister, otherwise known as Sarah Berresford, is the newest kid on the block where this is concerned. Her single, ‘For the Dales’, is an ode to that part of the English countryside she loves, where she aims to capture the mood and atmosphere of the hills and valleys. The track evokes the windswept, wild magic of the landscape, and Berresford’s delicate vocals are reminiscent with some of her contemporaries, including Lucy Rose and Ellie Rowsell.

The bittersweet longing Berresford translates is built around fragile folk sounds, which help to evoke that unique brand of British melancholia, while displaying Oh Sister’s understated talent. There are no testosterone-fuelled barrages here; this one’s an evocative, feminine tour de force.

‘For The Dales’ is out 2 August.
