Hailing from Los Angeles, The Rebel Light create music to match their sunny world of California. Beginning with some Beach Boys-esque harmonies, new track ‘Strangers’ incorporates jangling guitars with trumpets and hazy vocals, which emulates sixties American pop music to a tee.
The Rebel Light appear to have a knack for writing a catchy pop hook, with the chorus and harmonies guaranteed to be stuck in your head for days; yet, whilst drawing on such sixties influences, they still manage to sound distinctly modern. Indeed, the band’s retro sound seems to hark back to the days of that old West Coast dream of sunshine, surfing, tans and white teeth, to the point where the song feels like it should be the soundtrack to the latest ad for Californian holidays. But ‘Strangers’ also includes some psychedelic flavours, with the wall of guitars providing a platform for the dreamy vocals to play across – further proof that this band’s heart and soul is in sunny indie pop.
‘Strangers’ as a whole comes with a charming breeziness that reminds you of lazy, sunny days, which – in the current season – can’t help but make you long for summer.
‘Strangers’ is out on 9th March.
