On 26 May, Demon/Edsel will release a second volume of Gary Crowley and Jim Lahat’s hugely acclaimed and much-loved collection, Punk and New Wave Volume 2.

Taking their initial inspiration from Lenny Kaye’s 1972 ‘Nuggets’ compilation, Gary and Jim compiled Volume 1  in 2017. It brought together on CD many rare, one-off singles which were very much in keeping with the DIY spirit of the times. Although these songs would be classified as ‘punk’ or ‘new wave’, many could also be described as ‘power pop’, as a lot of these bands were reared on the brilliant 45s of this genre from the ‘50s and ‘60s.

For Volume 2 the pair have reunited to compile an outstanding follow up, once again mining their collections for more gems. This mega 77 track collection features some of the biggest names from the period such as The Clash, Ramones, The Jam, The Cure and The Slits. Alongside the bigger names, Gary and Jim also shine a light on lesser-known bands, those who might have left one great single in their wake such as Limit, Gary Valentine, The Wardens, Basement 5 and The Limps. Many of these incredibly rare tracks appearing here for the very first time on CD.

These songs are collected together in 4CD media book and a 6LP lift-off-lid box set. Both of of these formats come with a 32-page booklet, including extensive and passionate track-by-track sleevenotes by Crowley and Lahat – very much personal notes on what inspired these selections and Crowley’s first-hand memories of the time – as well as anecdotes from the likes of Viv Albertine (The Slits), Damian O’Neill (The Undertones), Glen Matlock, Gary Valentine, Mike Sweeney (Salford Jets) and more. The package is completed with a sublime selection of fascinating photos and memorabilia depicting this period of UK music culture.

The 28-track 2LP set is pressed on 140g black vinyl.

All tracks have been newly mastered by Phil Kinrade at Alchemy Mastering.

Gary Crowley’s Punk and New Wave Vol. 2 is a vital addition to Vol.1 and a must-have collection for any fan of this most extraordinary genre and period in British music, as well as any lover of rock’n’roll at its most primal and visceral.
