Ones To Watch: Desert Ships

‘Shell Shock’ – the new single from Londoners Desert Ships – is a burst of radiant and glistening sound. The track, along with their debut album ‘Doll Skin Flag’, was produced by Ride’s own Mark Gardener, whose shoegaze expertise has clearly rubbed off on Desert Ships, as the start of this track is 30 seconds of dreamy, psychedelic goodness. Bubbling guitars and melodic synths immediately bring the track to life. Such harmonious and ambient music renders comparisons to incredible bands such as Tame Impala or Slowdive, but with a major and joy-filled chorus reminiscent of early Blur.

The positive psychedelic vibes given off by Desert Ships is contrasted, yet complimented, by their deep, heavy vocals, which sets them apart from a lot of bands in the genre whose vocals are lost in a swirl of sounds and become incomprehensible. Their three part harmonies cut through the delicious spacey guitars in the chorus of the track perfectly, leaving you dazed in their unique sound. This added to such a simple but catchy chorus – “Yeah, can you feel the shell shock?” – makes for a fantastically upbeat song.
