Ones To Watch: \\GT//

Packing a more rampant engine roar than most sludgy, psych-rock acts, \\GT// cut through the thick, sticky nights of Birmingham, Alabama with the frantic unhinged groove of their new single ‘Something’s Wrong With My Mind’.

Bands like Hawkwind, No Age and Pissed Jeans are the immediate check-points, as the three-piece kick up a big swirling sonic storm of grizzly, fuzzy riffs, whilst front-man Scotty Lee growls away into an increasingly paranoid and demented breakdown – “Something’s wrong when I close my eyes/ I can’t go to sleep at night/ Something’s wrong with my mind”.

Unwinding like a trashy, B-movie, horror flick, it’s a jet-fuelled brew of foggy bombast and ju-ju cursed psychosis that erupts like a volcano. Lord knows what ancient voodoo gods they’ve upset, but the band sound like they’re suffering from a mad hallucinating fever with black poison seeping from every pore by the time the track reaches its furious, frazzled climax.

Check out two previous EPs Get Tryin’ and Heavy Dreams, and keep an ear out for debut album, Beats Misplaced, set to be released later in the year. Hopefully they’ll be feeling better by then.

‘Something’s Wrong With My Mind’ is out 31 July via Communicating Vessels and Rough Trade.
