Ones to Watch: …And The Hangnails

With March seeing the release of their latest single ‘Everybody’s Luck’, and their new album Dog on its way this year, …And The Hangnails are definitely ones to keep an eye on in the coming months. The York duo (Martyn Fillingham and Steven Reid), formed in 2011, have a clear punk ethos, apparent in both their sound and their live shows and releases. Their debut album No Time For Naysayers was written and recorded in just four days, entirely on a dictaphone. Having then released it just before their first ever live performance, it’s clear that there’s no fuss with these two – but who needs fuss when you can have raw, effortless, indie tunes?

….And The Hangnails are far from hesitant in making a name for themselves. As well as gaining support from NME and Clash Magazine, and having been out on the road with the likes of Slaves, Drenge and The Fall, the duo are known for their riotous house parties. It’s not surprising really: with their fusion of punk influences and guitar/indie-pop, they’re the perfect mix of happy-go-lucky fun and totally reckless. The grungy vocals combined with the sprightly guitars and manic drums make it an indie dream. However, having self-released two albums and several EPs, there’s no questioning Fillingham and Reid’s work ethic. And, if ‘Everybody’s Luck’ is anything to go by, Dog will definitely be something to look forward to.

‘Everybody’s Luck’ is out 9th March, with Dog set for release later this year.
