Ones To Watch: Seazoo

Originally the bedroom project of keys player Llinos Griffiths and guitar player/vocalist Ben Trow, Seazoo are one of many bands springing up from the rather unlikely home of North Wales. The momentum for Seazoo came through good old-fashioned radio play; on listening to the psychedelic, feel-good melodies of the band, it’s no wonder they have been played on BBC Radio Wales, Amazing Radio and Steve Lamacq on BBC 6Music – and received a fantastic reception from it.

Seazoo’s latest EP, Car Deborah, is set to be the perfect soundtrack to summer for the indie kids who’ve grown tired of the same old stuff. Opening track, ‘Dawn in the Mirror’, is reminiscent of both Girls and Morrissey: Trow’s vocals add a sort of melancholy tone to the sparkly, upbeat guitars, saving it from becoming sickeningly sweet, whilst not preventing the forced foot-tapping the EP induces. With the rest of the EP – ‘Panda Pains’ in particular – come britpop vibes. The psychedelia, combined with sunshiny melodies, leads to the notion of sitting in a grassy field somewhere (a feeling that the band create despite the likes of Spar in Rhosddu as being places of note for the EP).

Seazoo strike a perfect balance between sweet and sour and, whilst their melodies may be stuck in your head for days after a single listen, you certainly won’t regret it.

Car Deborah is out 1 June
