Ones To Watch: Shields

With a début album on the horizon, Northern based band Shields have taken a strong step into the indie music scene. They brand themselves as being math-indie and after supporting the likes of Placebo and Everything Everything the quintet certainly earned the respect of some major and well established groups.

Shields have also found themselves performing on stage at Glastonbury and the BBC 6Music festival. Their début EP Kaleidoscope has received the support from The Guardian and has been produced by Adrian Bushby, who has worked with the likes of Muse and the Foo Fighters.

The development of their sound has been largely due to their unique approach to production. They’ve produced all their own music from their own homemade studio, which caught the eye of Bushby who requested to produce for them after hearing some of their early work. Bushby has said, “Shields, in my opinion, are one of the best bands I’ve heard in a long while, in both song-writing and performing. They are an incredibly fresh and original-sounding band who I think will go on to achieve great things.”

Having listened to their EP I can’t help but agree with Adrian – the band are certainly unique, you feel essences of the DIY style they have adopted and it only adds to their exclusivity. If I was to compare them to anyone else, I would say they are most aligned with Everything Everything and Foals. I certainly hope they can go on to be as successful as either of those bands because I am seriously liking what I have heard from them so far…

How Can We Fix This?, the new EP from Shields, is set for release 26 February next year, on Kaleidoscope Records.
