PLAYLIST: May 2017

We’re mid-way through May and we’re excited to share some of our favourite tunes with you this month. It’s an eclectic mix featuring industrial rockers Hate Vessel, the excellent Chastity Belt, a new one from Harry Styles, and a Grandaddy track to honour the recent passing of Kevin Garcia. Check it out…

Blood Red Shoes – ‘It’s Getting Boring By The Sea’
The Great Escape Festival kicks off on the 18th of this month, and I’m excited to head down to Brighton again to hear some of the finest new music on the scene at the moment. B’town rockers Blood Red Shoes will be performing, and with these two on the line-up it’s highly unlikely things will be boring by the seaside. (Kate Crudgington)

Grandaddy – ‘Underneath The Weeping Willow’
I was extremely sad and shocked to hear news of Kevin Garcia from Grandaddy tragically passing away last week, so just wanted to choose my favourite song of theirs, the utterly beautiful ‘Underneath The Weeping Willow’. I first heard it on a ‘Chill Out’ CD I got free with Q Magazine when I was about 15, and have been in love with it ever since. (Mari Lane)

COURTS – ‘Any Of Us’
This is the latest single from Indie lads COURTS and it’s brimming with as much soul and infectious rhythm as their previous releases. I’m looking forward to catching them live again on May 17th supporting Adam Naas at Rich Mix. (KC)

Gorillaz – ‘Momentz’
Humanz definitely had to grow on me. Unlike Harry Styles, I think I set out to like the record a bit too much – I don’t like to think that Damon can do anything wrong – and was disappointed by the fact that I didn’t love it. But we’ve got there, and while it only makes me more upset that I won’t be at Demon Dayz festival and missed out on tickets for the tour, I can at least enjoy having a boogie to ‘Momentz’ on my own. (Melissa Svensen)

Baby Queens – ‘Hear Me’
Recently saw the Cardiff collective of awesome women supporting The Orielles at The Social and was completely blown away. I just can’t get enough of their smooth soulful vocals, gorgeous grooves, utterly flawless harmonies and empowering vibes. (ML)

Harry Styles – ‘Woman’
I’ll admit I felt more than a little weird typing this. Initially, I wasn’t sure whether Harry Style’s debut solo venture was actually good or if it’s just good compared to what our expectations were. Three listens later and I’d be lying if I said I didn’t love it a little bit, and ‘Woman’ stands out. It’s a truly impressive turn around from his One Direction days. (MS)

Chastity Belt – ‘5am’
Taken from the Seattle band’s upcoming third album, ‘5am’ is a thing of dark beauty. Oozing a jangly, discordant cacophony with distinct Sonic Youth vibes, it’s filled with a fragile melancholy whilst maintaining the band’s trademark dreamy, scuzz-rock energy. (ML)

Hate Vessel – ‘7oo7’
Industrial trio Hate Vessel’s new track is going to please fans of 3Teeth and Nine Inch Nails. They’re not for the faint hearted, but they are for those who are willing to embrace their most intense, devilish desires. (KC)
