PREVIEW: Shhh – A Day Of Quiet Music

Now in its eighth year, London’s quiet music festival Shhh makes its much-anticipated return and it is certainly something to shout about… or perhaps not, as the case may be.

Shhh was developed by London music hub The Local and visual artist Luke Drozd. Unlike the louder, swaggering events contending for space on ones festival calendar over the summer, Shhh tiptoes into our lives on Saturday 31st January 2015. Yet, it is not afraid to makes its voice heard as it presents some of the finest lo-fi talent around.

Creating emotive, chamber music in a similar artistic vein to Final Fantasy aka Owen Pallett and Mutual Benefit, Wooden Arms promise to captivate onlookers, alongside the elegant experimentation of singer-cellist Laura Moody and the melodious musings of young, Northern-songstress Pip Mountjoy. Oli Deakin and Lyla Foy will be supplying more lo-fi loveliness as Lowpines beside sweet-sounding wayfarer Aaron Fyfe and the rootsy recountings of Jess Morgan.

Further contemplative offerings will come from the likes of: Seftl, Forced Random, Rhain, Dusty Stray, Richard Navarro, Paul Armfield, Ajimal, Puzzle Muteson, Helmut, De’borah and With Sun.

In previous years Shhh festival has included such internationally renowned artists as: This Is Kit, Gravenhurst, Wounded Knee, Stuart Braithwaite of Mogwai fame, Still Corners and Jon Hopkins, and has been curated by the likes of Rachael Dadd and RM Hubbert. If you are a fan of snug, impassioned performances and want to catch the rising stars of alternative folk and lo-fi music then be sure to head along.

As if that’s not enough, due to the intimate style of the event, Shhh has in the past had impromptu drop-in sets courtesy of Nico Muhly, David Thomas Broughton and Beth Orton. Who knows, it could happen again this year. You didn’t hear it here though; we’ll see how far the Chinese whispers stretch.
