Q&A with rising UK production duo Fastlane

Fastlane are a DJ/production duo with a growing reputation in the UK urban and club worlds for making catchy, dance-floor ready beats. Our Urban Music Editor, Matt Tarr caught up with them recently and here’s what they had to say…

MT: For people who aren’t so familiar with your music, how would you describe your music?

Fastlane: We would describe our music as energetic and original. We like using unique sounds and aim for all of our songs to have a catchy melody.

MT: Your latest track ‘Wasted’ has been out for a couple of weeks now. What has the feedback from people been like?

Fastlane: We have been receiving great feedback for the track and have been told by fans that they like that it’s a different sound, makes you want to move and that it has a slight jungle feel to it.

MT: We first saw you performing at DJ Target’s ‘Pitched Up’ event in Dalston and really enjoyed your performance. Is performing live something that you enjoy doing?

Fastlane: Performing is what we love the most. You get to have an instant sight of how your fans feel about your music there and then, which is a beautiful feeling.

MT: You list ‘quirky artists’ such as Will.I.Am and Kanye West as influences but what is it about their music that inspires you and are they the only ones?

Fastlane: We have a lot of artists who inspire our music such as Michael Jackson, Disclosure, MK, Coldplay and U2. We try and explore different genres to get a unique sound.

MT: Being Londoners, do you feel that your music is influenced by the area you were brought up in?

Fastlane: Definitely. Being brought up in London has been a great advantage because there are many different styles of music, which can help to influence us in all aspects.

MT: With the success that people like Calvin Harris, Disclosure and Rudimental have enjoyed over the last few years, do you feel that UK dance and electronic music is the strongest it’s been for a long time?

Fastlane: Yes it is. Us Londoners love to party and let loose on the weekend after a week of hard work. Clubbing is a very popular hobby and Dance music takes the lead in most clubs, which definitely benefits the genre a huge amount.

MT: What can we expect from you in 2015?

Fastlane: In 2015 we are going to be releasing our first ever single on iTunes. We hope to perform at more shows and have a lot of DJ gigs. We don’t really like to put pressure on ourselves and like things to happen naturally, however we do have a good feeling about this year.
