REVIEW: Various Artists – A Slight Disturbance In My Mind compilation

Whilst the title refers to a track by The Move,  A Slight Disturbance In My Mind is a collection of mind twisters compiled by Cherry Red Records. Released on 31st January the assembled group of tracks brings together the known, unknown and previously unheard from a period in time when being different was all rage amongst the psychedelic phenomena.

As the press release attests to when psychedelia became a fad it was labelled as ‘the new and dangerous sound in pop music’, this description maybe hints at the nervousness some critics had at the time when Rubber Soul was deemed as far as he mind could be bent. Not so. With the likes of Captain Beefheart, The 13th Floor Elevators and John’s Children bringing new fruits to the table, the results are a delightful platter of musical delights.

Featuring in total 84 tracks, this swath of classic 60’s tracks include the savage Making Time by The Creation, mod heaven with Kentish town’s finest The Action’s rendition of I’ll Keep On Holding On plus The Yardbirds Stroll On as featured in iconic 60’s groovy film Blow Up. Of the more obscure Am I The Red One by Mick Softley, Baby You’ve Got It by The Truth and Advertising Man by The Reaction switch on the lava lamp whilst the music dips and flips in and out of the supersonic speakers.

Of the previously unreleased special mentions goes towards an extended version of Security by The ‘N Betweens, Many With Money by Outrage and an alternate mix of The Move freak beat frenetic climax belter Disturbance. An outstanding compilation amongst the cloud of mediocre greatest hits treadmill, this inspired collection will certain have your hips in a twist.
