Scorcher LIVE @ The Jazz Cafe, Camden 24.11.14

With his brand new EP 1 of 1 released this week, Scorcher treat fans and friends to an evening of entertainment at Camden’s famous Jazz Cafe venue where they got to sample the brand new EP live in an event packed full of guest appearances and accompanied by a full live band.

Scorcher bagged a MOBO nomination on the first visual he released from the ‘1 of 1’ E.P for ‘Work Get It’ and with a history of creating mixtapes that have become classics in the UK Grime scene, such as the ‘Simply The Best’ trilogy, Scorcher came in to the release of 1 of 1 with a solid foundation. Scorcher said of his 9-track EP:

“I’m trying to make music people can live with – more than just music for the club, radio or car. I’m trying to bring people into my world and be a part of it, like IMAX.”

Following a superb opening support slot from talented vocalist Alice Olivia, Scorcher took to the stage and looked right at home from the word go. Alongside his amazing live band, which featured the scintillating vocals of Austin Drage, Scorcher shone and the grin that never left his face for a second told the whole story. He is clearly proud of the body of work that he has created with 1 of 1 and having witnessed the EP in a live setting, I can see exactly why!

Every single track that was performed fitted into the live arena, with the guest artists who appeared on stage also adding to the success of the event. Scorcher’s latest track ‘No One Else’ was a particular highlight and the vocals provided by Drage complimented Scorcher’s flow immensely. Whilst numerous artists made an appearance on stage, including G Frsh performing ‘Smoking While We Drink’ alongside the star of the night without even having done a soundcheck, the main event that people will be talking about for a long time aftewards had to be the return of The Movement, albeit without Devlin, as Wretch 32, Ghetts and Mercston all joined Scorcher on stage to perform a unique version of the closing track on the EP ‘Work Get It’.

The crowd reaction to seeing the group together again was hugely positive and we can only hope that this may signal some sort of collaborative release! With the success that Ghetts and Wretch 32 have had this year, their love for their good friend was clear to see and supporting Scorcher by coming down and performing showed the bond that these guys have.

With grime in the ascendancy and gaining more and more fans of the genre by the day, artists should certainly take a leaf out of Scorcher’s book and perform with live bands every so often in order to keep things fresh and offer a different perspective to the genre. The rawness of the performance and individuality that the live element gave each track ensured that the night was a unique experience and that is what people want when they watch an artist perform. So credit must be given to Scorcher for putting on such a brilliant show and with the success that the 1 of 1 EP is set to endure, I’m sure he won’t be going anywhere any time soon!
