Singles Reviews: Released 22.09.14

Last time GigSlutz asked me to review some singles, I had to listen to The Saturdays – I’d be lying if I said our friendship hasn’t suffered greatly.  I mean, I don’t know what I’d done to deserve that, clearly someone was mad at me.  But I’m all about second chances, so let’s see how this goes.  Oh and I’ve also accidentally ended up comparing all of the songs to dates… no I wasn’t sure why either… let’s go with it.

Arcade Fire – ‘You Already Know’

Arcade Fire are one of those super cool indie bands that everybody else is totes down with but have managed to completely evade me for however long, so I’m not going into this mid-orgasm as some might.  I quite like this; jangly and upbeat, with a kind of twisted ‘house of fun’ circus vibe coming through on the organ.  Win Butler’s mix of breathy and shouty vocal delivery add to this, giving the song a bit of a haunting feel which is really interesting.  I like a bit of lyrical accusations and self-deprication made upbeat, makes it way more fun.  Brilliant sing a long tune, a good slice of solid indie disco.  The ‘cool and quirky arty lover that you fancy a bit more than you should’ in the dating stakes.

Broken Records – ‘So Long So Late’

Apparently Scots six-piece Broken Records are a folk band.  This isn’t really a folk song is it, although I suppose the drumming could be considered to have roots in something more rustic.  Another jangly indie affair that invokes images of Bloc Party, hints of the Bastille generation and an Arcade Fire peppering.  It’s alright like, whack it on at a festival and a crowd will get all wavy and shouty.  Not blowing my mind, a bit meh, this week’s ‘boring beige date’ single.

Janet Devlin – ‘Creatures of the Night’

I’d just like to make clear now my thoughts on this song were the same before I found out she was an X Factor contestant.  It’s a sugary folk tinged effort that sounds like a Disney nursery rhyme, made even more juvenile by a vocal that can only be describe as aural sherbet.  Ah but Kate, I hear you cry, everyone loves sherbet! And yes, yes they do, but every now and then you get the one that’s so sickly sweet it becomes sour, your teeth hurt and your face screws up with the onslaught of diabetes – it’s like that.  Not for me at all, not for the over 5’s really.  However, high fives to the animation team on the video, that’s quite good.  Date comparison – bunny boiler.

Jessie J ft Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj – ‘Bang Bang’

I was prepared not to like this, the title makes it sound like punishment for some wrong I’ve committed done in a previous life.  However, it is not wholly terrible.  Jessie J and Ariana Grande have a 2 verse sing off about whose wily ways can make a boy the happiest.  Nicki Minaj then turns up, spells her name and the songs name through the medium of rap, and then everything’s wrapped up for the end of the song.  Although clearly impressive, for some reason Jessie J’s voice makes me very nervous, like all my windows might break at the same time.  So her in a sing off freaks me out a lot, as do some of the wholly questionable dance moves in the video.  Not awful, not boring, intoxicating for five minutes after a jagerbomb but probably not for me in the long term – the one night stand of this week’s singles.

Manic Street Preachers – ‘Futurology’

Looks like a Manic Street Preachers track, taste like one, sounds like it too.  No serious, play it, it sounds like a Manic Street Preachers song.  Strong guitar lead, a bit political and preachy, nice vocal line ready for chanting in the Millennium Stadium.  Not necessarily a bad thing, it’s just what they do.  So if you like them then no doubt you will enjoy this track, not about to inspire a new following though.  Date wise, the reliable one you can always go back to for a little comfort and stability because they never change.  I’ll let you decide if that’s good or not.

When not making cocktails for Manchester's finest, Le Titts is most likely to be found the other side of the bar in a cloud of smoke and wine musing loudly over her fantasy band line up, love of the album format and why nothing is better than The Stone Roses. And then spilling the wine...Loving the ride with GigSlutz.
