After building a following playing support for Miles Kane and rising star Jamie Webster, brand new band The Glass Hearts have finally dropped their highly anticipated debut single ‘Coupe deVille’.

Merging the musical talent of Tommy Cobley (former frontman of Leicester band Arcades) and Charlie Cole (previously lead guitarist in Stockport band Kashmere), the pair knew of each other through the scene before finally meeting IRL.

“We just started jamming as friends but it was pretty inevitable we’d make a band together one day,” they tell us. “We’re both very much into the same things and share a huge passion for our clothes and music.

“Over the past year we’ve been recording in Manchester with a producer called Andy Gannon who now plays bass for us, too,” they continue. “It’s been a really creative and inspiring twelve months for us and ‘Coupe deVille’ just felt like the perfect way to introduce ourselves, really.”

“It’s a direct and to-the-point tune with a huge chorus. We wanted to kick this thing off with a banger and we feel like ‘Coupe’ sets the tone for the whole project.”

A tone that nods largely to Northern Soul – albeit in a fresh new way, thanks to fuzzy guitar riffs and pounding percussion breaks.  The lads agree: “Tommy’s artsy lyrics and vocal delivery add a quirky twist. Plus Charlie’s guitar solo at the end of the song kind of wraps it all up as a cross between your Rock ’n’ Roll band meets Northern Soul.”

And do I detect a bit of… disco in there? “Yeah there is a bit! We love disco and our music tastes are pretty vast in the sense that we don’t just take inspiration from one genre. We like a lot [of things]. Disco is all we play before going out on stage.” Knew it.

There’s also a classic distinction on the record between the upbeat instrumental and downbeat lyrics that dig a little deeper. “It’s about passing through chapters in life but sometimes falling short of the mark,” they explain.

“The line, ‘it’s a half trapdoor’ talks about being aware of those bad habits that can leave you feeling down or frustrated and not quite being able to dodge them like you had first planned to, in a way.

“Like having a relapse or being in with the wrong crowd. You know what you’ve got to do but it’s just hard to get out of those situations sometimes.”

So what does their mate Miles think of the track? “Charlie worked with Miles when he was in-house at clothing brand PHIX, we then also supported him at a one-off show he did in Stockport at a 300-capacity venue.

“We haven’t directly sent him the song but he liked our ideas for it (and the video) when we spoke to him at his last Manchester date. Miles loves Soul music and has even covered it with The Jaded Hearts Club so we’d say it’s up his street.”

So where can we catch The Glass Hearts live? “We have stuff in the pipeline but nothing is announced yet. Live is where it’s at though and people can definitely expect some gigs soon for sure.”
