New Track: Harkin – ‘National Anthem of Nowhere’ and launch of new music project

In a new solo adventure, Katie Harkin – of Sky Larkin and Sleater Kinney – presents her debut track as Harkin; a cover of Apostle of Hustle’s ‘National Anthem of Nowhere’. To release a cover as a debut is perhaps a brave choice, but one that Harkin pulls off exceptionally.

She gives the track a welcome (and very careful) revamp, with the powerful instrumentation and delicate – though suitably hard-hitting – vocals. With the simplicity that every guitar track should have, it seamlessly combines the Spanish influence of the original with her punky, riot grrrl experiences.

Better yet, the debut track from Harkin comes as part of an exciting project from new Leeds-based label, Come Play With Me. The singles club sees the release of special 7″ vinyl, showcasing the most exciting artist from the Leeds city region; both new and more established acts across all genres will be demonstrating the sheer talent coming out of Leeds. Harkin’s track will be split with Cinerama’s ‘The Girl From The DDR’.

Set up as a Community Interest Company, Come Play With Me will reinvest all profits to identify even more exciting talent from this part of the world. With Harkin’s release, she’ll be donating her portion of the proceeds to Sensory Leeds – set up to offer high quality sensory experiences for people with disabilities.

There will be a special launch event at Sheaf Street Studios in Leeds on Thursday 24 September  featuring an interview with David Gedge alongside stripped down sets from:
