Track Review: Aeroplane Flies High – Growing

Who knew there was a UK underground grunge scene? I suppose there had to be somewhere, I mean, just look at the ridiculous amount of flannel being worn without irony these days. Yes, the sound of American disaffected youth in the nineties is still alive and well in the unlikeliest of places, Liverpool.

Taking their name from a Smashing Pumpkins box set, Aeroplane Flies High are set to emerge from Merseyside with a sound appropriately indebted to Billy Corgan’s Chicagoan outfit. In fact, AFH show all the signs of three kids raised on a non-stop diet of Sonic Youth, Weezer and Nirvana.

‘Growing’, only their second single on Snaketown Records, is a belter that shows the group’s handle on rock’s not-so-secret formula with thunderous caveman riffs and an infectious melody. They don’t have all the ingredients together just yet, a killer chorus wouldn’t go amiss for example, but it’s enough to show why Aeroplane Flies High are going places.

You can listen to ‘Growing’ and their previous single ‘Blossom’ for yourselves on Bandcamp and then check which venues near you they’ll be blowing the doors off soon on their Facebook page.

Elliott Homer.

Elliott Homer
Elliott Homer is an undisputed master of understatement, a black belt holder in mixed metaphors and long-time deserving of some such award for length of time spent chatting rubbish about music down the pub. Studies show prolonged exposure to his scribblings can cause migraines, hysterical pregnancy, night terrors and/or acne, yet seldom encourages readers to agree with the author, in fact quite the reverse, much to his eternal frustration.
