NEW TRACK: The Jacarandas – ‘Get Her Off My Mind’

Who’s up for some high-spirited, lustful, indie-pop?! If so, you might just like Birmingham band The Jacarandas’ latest demo, ‘Get Her Off My Mind’. Whilst the band sing “I can’t get her off my mind”, I’m having a similar issue with the song – although ‘issue’ perhaps isn’t the right word. I’m more than happy, in fact, to have this stuck in my head. It’s nostalgic, fun; the kind of song you want to listen to with friends before a night out, make-up in one hand, glass of wine in the other, reminiscing about anything and everything. It’s the kind of melodic guitar-pop that no matter how ‘cool’ or ‘obscure’ you think your music taste may be, you can’t help but enjoy a little too much.

Whilst overly melodic, it’s in the way The Smiths are overly melodic: it’s not necessarily a bad thing. Musically, the verses are complex but the vocals add a welcome simplicity to the track. Whilst smooth and tuneful, they aren’t over-complicated. John Hemsoll’s voice almost merges with the guitar, causing a perfect layering, rather than a hectic mix of sounds and melodies. Like many tracks of a similar nature, in spite of the somewhat melancholy lyrics, the song is undeniably uplifting. You can’t help but bop your head to the twangy guitar sound and effortless sounding vocal harmonies, and why would you want to help it? It’s a perfect feel-good, dance around your room kind of a track.

If you fancy catching The Jacarandas live, they’re playing a few dates over the next few weeks:
