TRACK REVIEW: Laurel Canyons – ‘Owe Nothing’

Sheffield boys, Laurel Canyons, bring authentic folk-rock back in their single ‘Owe Nothing’. After an explosive end to their previous record deal with manager and company, the band has come back fighting with a showstopper first song off their forthcoming Now We’re Rebuilding EP. Produced by Colin Elliot who has previously worked with the likes of Jarvis Cocker and Richard Hawley, the band should be onto a winner.

Laurel Canyons appear to have taken the unfortunate experiences in their career and used it to their advantage lyrically. Previously hidden emotions are set free in intelligent metaphor “the ugly and the overfed have taken all my songs”. Jake Cope’s falsetto brings a beautiful softness to the words that hold deeper anger within “you’re a fraud and I owe you nothing”. Such strong lyrics sung with forceful yet sweet falsetto draws comparisons to great folk-rock favourites,  Dry the River.

Textures and layers are built up of gentle guitar and delicate drums which swell and move with incredible force, making for a compelling end to an even more incredible song. Finally, as the sound dies down to a gentle guitar strum, Laurel Canyons repeat the words and message that runs through this song and EP in stunning and meaningful harmony: “I owe you nothing”.

‘Owe Nothing’ is out 22nd September, I highly recommend a listen!
