Tracks Of The Week: 20.07.15

Arguably one of the most exciting new guitar bands around, with their latest single ‘Here She Comes’, Pusher combine Ian Curtis-esque vocals with swirling guitars – somewhat reminiscent of The Horrors – creating an unexpected sonic masterpiece. With a lot of psych influenced bands emerging onto the scene, it’s often not a surprise for a band to quickly get lost in the sea of sameness; but it would seem, with ‘Here She Comes’, Pusher have the drive and talent to separate them from the masses.

Whilst the vocals are an undeniable feature – a voice like that could not be easily pushed aside – Pusher prove that you don’t need massive choruses and sing-a-longs to make an anthem. All you need is a bit of doom and gloom, a dash of psychedelia and bags of talent. It’s tracks like ‘Here She Comes’ that drag new music out from the repetitive cycle it slips into far too often, and shines through as a glimmer of hope.

‘Here She Comes’ is out now on 7” vinyl.

Set for release on 7th August, Binary Circus have (if you’ll pardon the pun) stirred up a bit of a storm with their latest single. Written on a black, toy grand piano in singer/guitarist John Fink’s daughter’s room – an instrument that is no doubt used to playing little other than ‘Twinkle Twinkle Little Star’ – it’s actually turned out pretty cool.

Recorded on the Gold Coast, there’s a definite surfer feel to ‘Storm’. The band have taken their traditional grunge/rock sound and layered it with a more bluesy influence giving it the degree of nonchalance you’ll only find in Australians. That said, every element of it is impressively strong, and nonchalance shouldn’t be mistaken for laziness – anyone who can write a song this good on a toy piano is a true musician.

‘Storm’ will be released on 7th August.

Formerly known as Algernon Dolls, Glaswegian 2-piece WOMPS have announced their debut single ‘Live A Little Less’, and it’s a banger. Already gaining attention from NME, Clash, Artrocker and BBC Radio 1, as well as having shared stages with the likes of Cloud Nothings, FIDLAR, Metz, PAWS and Honeyblood, ‘Live A Little Less’ sums up and truly cements the hype around WOMPS.

With the track recorded by Steve Albini, the influences are clear; the garage rock sounds of the likes of Nirvana and The Cribs shine through, but WOMPS give them an added freshness, and perhaps a little sensibility. Amongst the guitar noise and intense drums, you’ll find a suggestion of order. And what’s to say a bit of order never paid off? With a debut this consistently strong, WOMPS clearly have their heads screwed on.

‘Live A Little Less’ is out on 28th September

In need of some upbeat, foot-tap inducing rock’n’roll? Look no further than Jacuzzi Boys. Their summery garage rock – no doubt inspired by life in Miami – is proper road trip music. Sure, you want to be head banging to it, but you want to be doing so in a convertible, somewhere in a desert.

Buzzing with feedback, intense solos and properly grungy vocals, Jacuzzi Boys combine their no holds barred attitude with raw talent and the sunshine influence of Miami. Straying ever so slightly from their grunge instincts, the “ooh-ooh”s add an almost Britpop vibe, giving the track a sort of sweetness that, whilst not instantly obvious, is definitely present. Stick this one on your summer playlist.

‘Happy Damage’ – taken from the Happy Damage EP set for Autumn release – is available now as a free download.
