Tracks Of The Week – 28.04.14

Recorded and produced by The Coral’s James and Ian Skelly, ‘Gonna Get To You’ is Stourbridge three-piece Circles’ debut EP. The majority of which was apparently recorded in singer Paul’s kitchen in order to capture the raw sound the band strive for, ‘Gonna Get To You’ is an impressive collection of songs, drawing on inspiration from the likes of The Beatles and American duo The Black Keys, that showcases British guitar music at its best.

The EP’s title track is a retro-sounding offering filled with zestful bluesy riffs, with hints of ‘90s Stone Roses-inspired indie, that harks back to the exciting days of rock ‘n’ roll. A must-listen for lovers of raw, impassioned rock.

‘Gotta Get To You’ is released on 9th June, on Skelly’s Skeleton Key Records, prior to which Circles will be embarking on a five date tour with label mates, The Sundowners:

10th – LIVERPOOL – Zanzibar

13th – LONDON – Madame JoJo’s

15th – LEEDS – Brudenell Social Club

16th – MANCHESTER – Night & Day

30th – BIRMINGHAM – Sunflower Lounge

Having been initially recorded as the fastest-released record of all time for Record Store Day last week, Jack White’s latest offering – ‘Lazaretto’ – is yet another impressive feat for the consistently prolific, former White Stripes front man. With characteristically frenzied, reverb-filled riffs, thrashing beats, climatic energy and an eclectic array of various sound effects and melodies, White’s latest offering does not disappoint.

Recorded at his Third Man Studios in Nashville on 19th April straight onto vinyl, ‘Lazaretto’ arrived to hundreds of queuing fans that same day. White’s new album of the same name will be out 10th June; I’m nearly as excited about that as I am about seeing him at Glastonbury…

Inspired by night-time bike rides through New York, Liam Finn’s latest indie fuzz-pop single – ‘Burn Up The Road’ – is now out, ahead of his new LP, ‘The Nihilist’.

Reminiscent of the anthemic sound of the likes of Arcade Fire with the chilled out, garage-rock vibes of Kurt Vile and co, ‘Burn Up The Road’ is a delightfully surreal, sparkling soundscape. As we bear witness to captivating melodies that showcase Finn’s inspired musical talent (he plays a total of 67 instruments on the album!), this track offers a dynamic fusion between dreamy, scuzz-rock riffs and upbeat, theatrical refrains that will embed themselves in your memory without fail.

It’s no wonder Finn has shared the stage with legends such as Eddie Vedder, Wilco and The Black Keys, and I can only hope he comes to a stage near me in the very near future…

The Nihilist is out 5th May, via Yep Roc Records.

Having previously sold out King Tut’s, played at their local T In The Park festival and recently headlined Camden’s Proud Galleries as part of a This Feeling night, Scottish sextet – Sienna – are now set to play Liverpool’s Sound City festival on Saturday.

Prior to this, Sienna have released new single ‘Wandering Star’: with its twinkly melodies, hints of cheerful ska, ‘60s doo-waps a plenty and soulful vocals, it really is the perfect Spring ditty. And, having been receiving acclaim from the likes of XFM, and with dates supporting Scouting For Girls in the pipeline, the future looks as bright for Sienna as their uplifting melodies sound.

Catch Sienna at:

Liverpool Sound City – Saturday 3rd May

Glasgow – Nice And Sleazy – 7th May

Gourock – The Beat Club – 8th May

Perth Concert Hall (supporting Scouting For Girls) – 30th May
