Tracks Of The Week, 28.01.15

Italian duo, Shirley Said, create sweeping, ambient electro melodies. Comprising of Giulia Scarantino and Simone Bozzato, the pair now reside in London and are set to release their new single, ‘Merry Go Round’, in March.

As haunting, misty melodies and delicate vocals flow against the harsh, striking beats and electronic swells, ‘Merry Go Round’ is sure to send shivers down your spine. For fans of the likes of Portishead, here is a track resplendent in its chilling beauty.

If you like what you hear, there will be an official launch party for ‘Merry Go Round’ at North London’s The Finsbury on 26th March. And, if you can’t wait that long, Shirley Said will be playing The Old Queen’s Head on 15th February.

Forming part of the rising wave of DIY music making in the North East, Durham’s Martha caught our attention last year with their debut album, Courting Strong.

Back with their endearing youthful energy and feel-good raucous vigour, Martha have now released a video for new single, ‘Sleeping Beauty’. As driving guitars and catchy hooks are accompanied by luscious harmonies, Martha tell tales of childhood nostalgia and sibling rivalry with such spirit that you can’t help but want to give them a big hug.

A refreshing blast of twinkling indie-pop that is sure to make you feel as young as the band sound. And it comes complete with its own Scooby Doo reference – what more could you ask for?

‘Sleeping Beauty’ forms part of a ‘mixtape’ of the same name, available to download here.

Boston’s Krill are back with new single, ‘Foot’, taken from their forthcoming album. Favourites of 6Music’s Marc Riley, and having received acclaim from NME as well as – of course – Gigslutz, the trio have been making waves with their compelling, disjointed rock.

With blasts of those distinctive nasal vocals alongside thrashing guitars and an angst-driven, grunge-like energy, ‘Foot’ is a somewhat unnerving – yet utterly riveting – listen. A potent cacophony that will leave you wanting more.

Krill’s forthcoming album, A Distant Fist Unclenching, is released 16th February via Steak Club (UK). Pre-order here.

Originally written whilst trying to get his daughter to sleep at some ungodly hour twelve years ago, John Lewis (not to be confused with the department store) has now re-recorded ‘Waltz Around The Kitchen’ with the help of Imelda May.

With enchanting harmonies and lustrous, country-infused folk melodies, this soulful track has all the smooth grace of the Waltz it speaks of. A beautiful, heartfelt offering that will indeed inspire you to grab a partner and waltz around the kitchen (though, if your kitchen’s as small as mine, it may be more of a shuffle).

John Lewis’ forthcoming album, His Other Side, is due for release 31st March, via Atomic Cowboy Records.
