Turrentine Jones LIVE @ Barfly, Camden 11/12/14

Rating:

‘TurrenTINE, TurrenTEEN, it doesn’t matter how you pronounce it really’ they stated, which failed to settle the debate I was having with my friend on the matter. The opening chords of ‘Moonlight Is On Yer Side’ sent warm southern vibes rippling through the crowd for which we were grateful for on such an icy night.  The Blues saturated tracks, such as ‘Love Heard You Coming’ taken from their debut album Our Days, were met with a contagious charisma.  Julian Neville’s ability to playfully drawl his vocals wrapped perfectly around riffs which were reminiscent of The Doors with jaunty piano lines giving the crowd permission for spontaneity.

I had to keep reminding myself that the trio have their roots in Manchester as the beatnik mood of the night placed us all in a whisky bar in Tennessee. This was due to their combination of raw, home-grown beats and fun melodies with a notable twang. I got the impression that Turrentine Jones are either completely unaware of their potential or just quite shy as they modestly left the stage to cries for an encore.
