Gigslutz Interview: Delca Kara

After wandering round Liverpool for somewhere quiet to sit, myself and 3 out of 5 members of Delca Kara sat outside Café Rouge in the rain and spoke about Facebook stalking and our favorite venues. The hotly tipped band are due to release their first new single on itunes as of June 9th

Hello! How did you form as a band?

Jono– Well we were formed in a previous band called candidate 23, from Runcorn / Liverpool and we rebranded a couple of months ago.

Alex– Candidate 23 was like a band for when we were kids and it sort of brought us from kids to mature people.

Jono– Yeah we renamed as Delca Kara working with a London PR company, which is bringing out the single ‘Cupid’ on the 9th of June. We’ve got a fresh sound and fresh attitude. All that kind of stuff.

Ryan– its so weird starting with a new name, it feels like a new band. Well, it is a new band.

When starting out in Candidate 23 did you think you’d be supporting the likes of Royal Blood?

A– No I really didn’t

R – Definitely

J– Yeah haha definitely, we thought we were the best band in the world but it was cool supporting Royal Blood, it was round about when they were just getting big with about 50 people in the venue.

A– They were going to radio 1 that day and then the next day it was like they had 1000 more likes and a huge fan base. We’ve played with the likes of Don Broco and Catfish and the Bottlemen, the Hoosiers and Crocodiles.

When you were supporting these bands, what did you learn?

A– Well it was a massive learning curve as we’re doing stuff now that we wouldn’t of expected in terms of the tech side.

R– You just learn how to carry yourself

J-You have to learn how to look dead good. You have to know how to take it all in you stride as the other band do it. They can walk in a room and look really cool.

A– It makes you realize why they’re actually famous and why we’re still kind of at the bottom for the moment.

How did it come about getting support from Zane Lowe and Matty Healy?

J– Well we did a bit of stalking really, we waited outside of radio 1 for a bit when were in Candidate 23 and Zayne Lowe comes out in his track suit bottoms carrying a laptop and he was really cool with us! He didn’t want to rush at all and we were all talking for about 15 minutes, he was just really nice.

A– Such a legend. But yeah we did a bit of Facebook stalking and found Matt, so Will our singer sent him the track and he said he really liked it but we should change our name, so we did.

Who are the bands inspirations?

J– The 1975 more recently and they’ve just built themselves up so much with renaming 3 times and now they’re massive! They just know what to do, they’re so cool.

A– When we write songs we always find ourselves referring back to the 1975.

J– We don’t copy them at all; it’s just the influence. We really like the Wombats too, definitely.

A– Lyrically Will (lead singer) tries to go for more joy division kind if stuff, well that’s what he says.

J– Foals are cool too, that kind of that pop vibe. We all listen to loads of different music.

How did you find making your own music video?

R– Well we did some ourselves but pretty soon after that we realized we should just go with the proper music videos.

A– It was just amazing, in some mill near north Manchester. Just a broken down room with a load of lamps everywhere.

J- I must of played the song at least 20 times with being the drummer I had to be in every frame.

What are your favourite venues in Liverpool?

J– Shipping forecast for me

A– Mines got to be the Kazimir

R– I loved at sound city when they changed that car park into a venue, Duke Street car park. That’s my favorite car park.

J– So we’ve got our single coming out on June 9th and our video will be released pretty soon. If you just keep looking on our Facebook and twitter for updated of new music and shows. It’s all a bit different for us, as we’ve never really done much with this type of music. We were more indie rock….

R– We’re more experimental with electronic stuff now, the producer were work with as soon as we said we wanted to do more electronic stuff, sirens went off in his head and it all took off from there.

J– Next year we want to play more festivals and just let everything fall into place, we need some more music behind us before we do anything major. More singles out before Christmas and start playing loads of gigs. Start spreading out from Liverpool and getting out there. We’re playing the Zanzibar on the 13th of June and hopefully we won’t get killed on stage or our amps won’t blow up….

A– And we’re not ‘ Dec-la Kara’ it’s ‘Del-sa Kara’ people always pronounce it wrong.

R– is it a real word? Didn’t you make it up?

A– yeah it’s a real word!

R– I’ll google it, I’m positive it’s not a real word! I hope it’s not something really dodgy on urban dictionary. It means ‘really fast like a ninja’ hah Ninja Kara! I’m going to wear a ninja costume on stage

J– we can start playing the whole set with just shadows!

You can watch Delca Kara’s new video to their single cupid right here-

To keep up to date with them, be sure to look at their two forms of social media for now, they promised to make an instagram account soon though!
