Thee MVPs, I Like The Go Go & Voodoo Binmen LIVE @ The George 22.11.13

On Friday The George Tavern plays host to a mix of the top new bands in Britain. Here’s a rundown:

THEE MVPs (11:00pm)
garage/punk/surf

This Gravesend 4-piece are pleasingly reminiscent of the ‘Raw Power’ of Iggy and The Stooges. In terms of modern day comparisons, they’re the closest thing Britain have to Parquet Courts and they’re an equally stimulating force live. Everything is played at breakneck speed, but this isn’t simply thoughtless thrash, as it bears significant evidence of coherent, accomplished song-writing. Thee MVPs channel punk’s energy in a wholly contemporary way. Don’t miss them! Ty Segall didn’t when he was in London last year, he made sure they were his support band.

I LIKE THE GO GO (10:15pm)
garage/punk/surf

This Brighton-based 2-piece garage rock outfit are causing a bit of a stir at the moment thanks to their reputation as one of the best live bands around, and – for now – are still relatively underground. Recently, they’ve been seen sharing stages with Fat Whites and Slaves, and along with them, are helping dig up the sound of early British punk from its grave and throw it back into the forefront of the music industry.

VOODOO BINMEN (9:30pm)
garage/punk/surf

London-based band also part of the garage/surf/punk revival. Forget about those folded arm, beard stroking gigs. This will be an amazing show.

NORMANTON STREET (8:45pm)

VV Brown and The Mouse Outfit have recently had Normanton Street as support and they’ve just begun a residency at The Slaughtered Lamb. They’re excellent musicians who play sax-infused soul and hip hop. They rap about the mundane and give it a poetic beauty.

BENGAL LANCERS (8:00pm)

Energetic newcomers from Leicester playing Amazing Radio-tipped indie pop. Bella Union label boss Simon Raymonde recently played them on his show too.
