Evening Sports fans! Sorry for leaving you in the lurch last week, I’m sure you made your own fun and survived, perhaps some of you formed an accordion band (other instruments are available)… Any who, I’m back! Now as you who venture outside may have noticed, it’s beginning to look a lot like sodding Christmas, and it’s titting November! So in order to combat this premature ejaculation of festive flunk, I shall provide you with a slightly themed list this week. For what could be less festive and more fun than American desert/country rock n roll!
(btw this was not planned, it happened per chance that these guys were touring, like a sign…)
Queens Of The Stone Age
Stoner desert rock Kings QOTSA are all over the UK this week like a sexy rash. Into their second decade of gigging and recording, they know exactly how to take care of a crowd. Guaranteed banging night out, so established they are now that frontman Josh Homme has taken the Arctic Mondays under his greasy wing to great applause. Look out for classic singalong ‘Feel Good Hit of The Summer’, love.
Queens Of The Stone Age play Manchester, Birmingham and London this week.
Valerie June
I was first introduced to Valerie June listening to Cerys Matthews’ Radio 6 show while dusting, and I instantly decided she’s amazing. Having caught her in Glasgow earlier this year, it is an intimate, enthralling country-blues experience. Whether it’s the stomping Can’t Be Told, the true independent woman anthem Working Woman Blues, to the tearily beautiful Somebody To Love, she’s captivating and an amazing musician. Catch her in these smaller venues and chat to her afterward, Southern hospitality, proper blues and pure soul personified.
Valerie June plays The Haunt, Brighton on Sunday 24th
Courtney Jaye
In a similar vein but slightly more abstract, Courtney Jaye plays ‘tropical country’. Her crooning Nashville voice combined with sun soaked acoustic guitars fills you with an overwhelming urge to grab a long drink and sway along with your neighbour, which I imagine is perfect behaviour to single Box Wine. Comes highly recommended from The Hangover’s Zack Galifianakis. Looking to get hazy? She’s your gal.
Courtney Jane plays Notting Hill Arts Club, London as part of a mixed bill on Tuesday 19th
Scarlette Fever
Going slightly against the theme, Scarlette Fever is not American. She does, however, have an outstanding voice in a totally 80’s female pop rock way – think Chrissy Hind disposition with some Cher shine, in totally the best way. I defy you not to start doing your attitude dance to Hour of Sunshine. Could be playing larger venues soon, so catch her big sound in these smaller ones while you can.
Scarlette Fever plays The Borderline, London on Tuesday 19th
