Eight Rounds Rapid Release Double A-side: ‘Writeabout/Steve’

Recently receiving acclaim on BBC 6music from both Steve Lamacq and Gideon Coe, Southend’s rising stars, Eight Rounds Rapid, have just released their new double a-side single and vinyl debut – ‘Writeabout/Steve’. Having supported the inspirational Wilko Johnson on his March ‘Farewell’ tour, with a particularly memorable show at London’s Koko, this provocative new rock band are certainly one to keep your ears out for. With just 500 copies of this limited edition run of the band’s first seven inch single released, it’s quite an exciting time for Eight Rounds Rapid, and for anyone who is lucky enough to get their hands on one of these special recordings.

Although impossible to pigeon-hole into any one genre, the impressive songs that are blasted out by this band are punk-infused reminders that real music is not dead. At the same time, however, despite the venomous, angst-filled sound that Eight Rounds Rapid generate, they have also proved themselves to be skilled lyrical story tellers – as vocalist, David Alexander, has poetically said of the band: “Every song is a story, some seen through a kaleidoscope”.

With a shot of post-punk buzz, pounding drums, and rapid, impassioned lyrics, ‘Writeabout’ is a fast-paced, anthemic storm of a song, whilst ‘Steve’ is filled with climatic, groovy riffs delivered charismatically by Simon Johnson (yes, Wilko’s son), and a strong, pumping bass line. In other words, both sides of this release are fantastically unique – an exciting cacophony of sound that should not pass you by.
