Introducing Interview: Addeboy vs Cliff

Having received acclaim from the likes of The Guardian and Clash, Swedish producer duo Andreas Broberger and Hannes Lindgren, aka Addeboy vs Cliff, have previously worked with Say Lou Lou and played at the opening ceremony Umea – the culture capital city of Europe 2014.

Now, back with a chilled, electro-pop single, Addeboy vs Cliff told us all about it when we had a little chat with them…

Hi Addeboy vs Cliff! Can you tell us a bit about yourselves?
Hello. We are two guys in our prime from the north of sweden who likes food and good music. We make music together. Both for others but also ourselves. Producers and writers.

How did you two meet?
We first met on a hockey rink in our home town. And in high school we randomly ended up in the same band, and have been playing together ever since.

Can you tell us about your single ‘Phoenix’?
It’s a song we wrote together with Jan Kask who we have worked with in some other projects before, and we really like his writing. We made the track during a project together with Toontrack. We have been producing a drum expansion pack for one of their products and this song was a part of the product release.
So many of the drum sounds in Phoenix you can also find in the ”Dreampop” ezx for EZ drummer 2. We like it!

The single certainly has an EDM / electro pop sound, but what other styles of music would you consider to have influences on you?
All genres influence us. As long as it has something that moves you in some way.

What is it like to be producers in Sweden, and what’s the scene like over there for your style of music?
It is very nice being producers here. The talent is infinite and there are so many nice people to work with and learn from (or steal from). And because of that the whole world is open, which is inspiring and cool.

You sing in English. Is it harder for you to write in English or do you prefer it?
We seldom sing ourselves and we always work with writers or artists that mostly write in English. Maybe it’s easier to get away with cheesier lines in English? But as long as it sounds good, and feels real, the language doesn’t matter.

Are there any artists / bands from Sweden that write in their native tongue that we should look out for?
Erik Lundin!

How do you feel about EDM today – is it easier, or more difficult, for producers like Addeboy vs Cliff to make their mark?
It’s probably more difficult today since it’s not novelty anymore. It’s nice that the genre has evolved though, for a while it became kind of boring. But now it feels like it’s dissolving into all other genres.

Finally, what are your plans for the rest of 2016 / the start of 2017?
Maybe buy new skates for the winter and also make new music, and come out and play.

Huge thanks to Addeboy vs Cliff for answering our questions!

‘Phoenix’, the new single from Addeboy vs Cliff, is out now via Harbour Lights.
