Introducing Interview: Newtimers

Set to release a new EP next month, Swedish duo Newtimers combine synth-pop, RnB and ’80s soul to create their own, truly unique, sound.

With their previous single ‘Perfect Ten’ racking up more than 90k plays on Soundcloud, it seems that the duo’s distinctive brand of alt-pop is certainly starting to appeal to the masses.

We caught up with Newtimers to find out more…

Newtimers, please introduce yourselves!
We’re Andreas Britton Cavaco and Tim Lundblad, both giving the 30s a try. Andreas is the main singer and co-producer of the band and Tim is the main producer and co-singer. We’re like boyfriends without the love making.

For anyone not in the know, you’ve been around for a while now but can you tell us where and when it all started?
The story began in a rehearsal room back in ’03, Tim was the drummer and Andreas was the rapper of a neo-soulish band we both got drafted to be a part of. Tim was making beats on the side – that real J Dilla type thing – and seeing the Detroit scene was everything back then, so we just had to link up and create together. Tim and Andreas later started vibing on the side… A year later Newtimers was born, a lovechild who’s a teenager now.

Tell us all about EP One – what is the EP about?
It’s about everything. It’s the end of the end and start of the beginning. ‘Best of Me’ and ‘Perfect Ten’ were inspired by the relationships we had with two cheating SOB’s we were dating back then. ‘Flower on the Moon’ is a glimpse of future – we wrote that when we both found new loves… That one goes out to them.

Previous single ‘Perfect Ten’ massed over 100k plays on Spotify, how does it feel knowing so many people are listening to your music?
It’s an amazingly good feeling having people listening to what’s inside of you, an honor to take part in other peoples’ lives. It’s very much a one-way type of communication which is quite sad, but we really hope that if not words can be shared, at least we have thoughts to join us all.

How do you feel about pop today – is it harder for newer artists to make their mark in your opinion?
There’s so much talent out there so guess the answer has to be yes. Everybody’s fighting for the spotlight and only a few get to be seen, not always the better ones. There’s so much more than music that people are looking for now; it’s more a battle of the most interesting way to be seen. That’s quite alarming seeing as music is something you hear.

What are your plans after the EP release?
We’ve been writing songs since 2004, we’re covered for years and years. EPs, albums… You name it, we got it. If you like what we got cooking now, get ready to feast.

Where can we see you live next?
Keep your eyes open…

EP One, the upcoming EP from Newtimers, is due for release 10 June via Cosmos Music.
