REVIEW: P!nk Aston Villa Football Stadium, Birmingham 13.6.23

Characterized as a ‘fantasy feat of a lifetime’ taking in 63 stadiums, three festivals and 22 arenas on a worldwide Summer Carnival tour, this mammoth adventure is not many would be brave enough to take on.

Multifarious superhuman endeavors is what fans of Pennsylvanian native P!nk have eagerly become used to, wondrous stage roguery, nonstop pop anthems with a on-stage energy someone half her age would have difficulty keeping up with, tonight the Mardi Gras comes to town in the expansive Aston Villa Football stadium, former European Cup winners, the vast arena is an overly fitting stage for the peoples champion.

Support acts Gayle, The Script and KIDCUTUP whip the crowd into a frenzy with their affable pop and mixed bounteous playlists. P!nk enters the stage via prodigious techniques, if you thought going to the Olympics would be the only place a trained gymnast could show off their glittering skills you would be wrong, bouncing, rebounding and landing perfectly on stage as she sings Get This Party Started, scoring a perfect 10, we’re witnessing something unimaginable.

From previous nights on the tour the set list promises banger after banger, hit after hit, the likes of the pop parade haven’t seen since primetime Material Girl adventures. Lyrics don’t touch the banal or inconsequential, lines touch on subjects that her audience know from personal experience; alienation, youthful mental stresses, body image, drugs, sentimentality and empowerment, this vocal outlet gives the 40,000 crowd a place for authentic emotions to be shared.

Exhibiting a cutting-edge space age light show, danseuse and danseurs performing like their lives depended on it and musicianship straight out of the top draw, the fast moving pageant is hard to beat. Maybe the showstopper is seeing her daughter join her on stage for the poignant Cover Me In Sunshine, this home from home erupts with elation seeing 2 generations joining together delicately. Comparable ecstasy is unleashed for Who Knew, Turbulence, I Am Here, Runaway and the final curtain call of So What, she sings ‘I’m a rock star’ gliding, diving, and revolving over the congregation is something out of this world.

One of a kind pièce de resistance, for many a pinnacle performer, whatever you think, P!nk is a prodigious talent.
