Apollo Junction LIVE @ The Dublin Castle, Camden 29.05.14

With their co-ordinated fashion seemingly inspired by Jack White (black, white and red all over…) and contagious electro-indie tracks, it’s easy to see how Apollo Junction are taking the mainstream music media by storm. Therefore, when Camden’s acclaimed venue The Dublin Castle hosted the Leeds based group with free entry, it was impossible to pass up on the offer.

13760927044_c5e84604cf_zAfter stumbling in on their sound check twice (sorry!) Apollo Junction eventually kicked off with a pulsating intro. Due to the intimacy of the venue – and the band’s ability to place everyone in the room at ease with sun-drenched, synth heavy tunes – the atmosphere soon turned into a friendly get together rather than an assortment of punters. Talent draws crowds but it’s usually personality that makes them stay and, luckily enough, Apollo Junction have plenty of both. Finding themselves having to pause due to “technical difficulties”, what could have been an awkward silence was actually filled with singer Jamie Williamson proudly showing off that day’s claw machine win (a Psy doll that even sang ‘Gangnam Style’, in case you were wondering) before exploding back into their set of catching riffs and dance anthems.

Apollo Junction are making a name for themselves with their uptempo summer soundtracks, however it’s their hit single ‘If I Fell’ which has grabbed the nation’s attention. Giving the track a live airing got of to a stalled start due to keyboard player Sam Potter suffering from a bout of food poisoning, but kudos to the guy, he powered through anyway and the crowd were rewarded with beautiful harmonies filling the room.

One thing that Apollo Junction will never be in short supply of is charisma, refusing to confine themselves to one space as they danced around the stage and room with an electric energy. Combining this with their close detail to melodies, danceable synths and sharp guitar work, Apollo Junction are an ideal accompaniment to the summer months ahead, and it is most likely we will be hearing a lot more of them.
