Mitski is cool. Yeah she’s cool because she makes kick ass music and is signed to Double Double Whammy Records who also house the likes of Frankie Cosmos, Quarterbacks, Porches and LVL UP (their roster is one to be revered and obsessed over right now). But Mitski is also cool because she should be every woman’s idol.
Making music in NY since 2012, Mitski Miyawaki is the kind of woman I wish more girls actually listened, and looked up, to. Mitski knows what she wants and how she can get it, and it’s by being herself. Yes, we all wish we were Beyoncé, but she has her flaws (as an idol, not a woman). Mitski puts into words the feelings that most women – hell, most people – can relate to.
Most recent album Bury Me At Makeout Creek is full to burst with ’90s rock nostalgia and simple, no messing, lyrics. Mitski grabs your attention with lyrics like “I am stronger than you give me credit for” on ‘I Don’t Smoke’, and “I’m not gonna be what my daddy wants me to be” on ‘Townie’. Here are expressed the typical struggles of young women who feel under-appreciated and need an idol to show them they can do whatever their heart desires. It’ll be tough, but you can do it.
Mitski makes melancholic, yet crazy, heavy rock tunes. Her vocal talent mirrors this, beautiful and angelic top ends alongside mysterious lower end harmonies show off her skill – how she manages to perfect both is beyond me. ‘Texas Reznikoff’ is the first, and one of my favourite, tracks on Bury Me At Makeout Creek. A gentle and calm beginning, where Mitski is almost singing a lullaby to rock me to off to sleep, until the sudden sound of squealing guitar announces the entrance of what could be hundreds of thrashing and crashing guitars and drums to wake you up from any sort of slumber. Mitski is my new inspiration and favourite artist. Cool.
