Gig Preview: Everything Everything at NX Newcastle

British art rock pioneers Everything Everything are set to bring their captivating live show to NX Newcastle later this month. The gig, part of their UK headline tour, will take place on Wednesday 11 December, and promises to be a milestone performance as they debut tracks from their recently released new album, Mountainhead.

The band, known for their boundary-pushing sound and thought-provoking lyrics, released their seventh LP earlier this year to critical acclaim. The album dives into a timely dystopian narrative where society obsessively builds an enormous mountain, only to deepen the hole they live in as a poignant metaphor for societal structures and human ambition.

Speaking exclusively to The Crack, drummer Michael Spearman described the themes of the album: “Mountainhead is about humanity’s obsession with growth, even at its own expense. It’s an album that asks questions about where we’re headed and how we deal with the choices we’ve already made.”

The upcoming performance at NX is particularly special for the band, marking their return to this iconic venue. Formerly known as the O2 Academy, NX has long been a hub for the region’s vibrant music scene, making it the perfect setting for the band’s latest sonic adventure.

Spearman expressed the band’s excitement: “We’ve always felt a strong connection to the North East, so bringing our tour to NX feels like a homecoming in a way. We’ve played smaller venues such as The Cluny loads of times and the energy of the crowds here is unmatched.”

This connection isn’t just sentimental, however – bassist Jeremy Pritchard hails from Sunderland, giving the performance an extra layer of significance. “The North East has always been part of my story,” Spearman says. “There’s something truly special about performing in a region that feels like home. I can’t wait for the crowd to hear what we’ve been working on.”

Everything Everything have a reputation for exhilarating live shows, combining intricate musicianship, striking visuals, and powerful narratives. Their Newcastle setlist is expected to feature songs from Mountainhead alongside fan favourites such as Distant Past, Cough Cough, and Night of the Long Knives.

“We’ve designed this tour to be an immersive experience,” Spearman added. “It’s not just a gig; it’s a journey through the ideas and emotions of Mountainhead.”

Fans attending the NX show can expect the band’s signature fusion of genres, with elements of rock, electronica, and experimental pop seamlessly woven together.

With a Metacritic score of 82, Mountainhead has been hailed as one of the band’s most ambitious projects to date. The Guardian described the album as “a dark, thought-provoking masterpiece,” while NME called it “a daring exploration of the human condition.”
