Big In 2019 Interview: Lauran Hibberd

Lauran Hibberd’s brand of pop-punk is gaining a lot of attention due to her true-to-life lyrics and delicious riffs being impossible to resist.

Already being tipped by Huw Stephens and BBC Introducing, she has already released some wonderfully memorable pop-punk nuggets, in the shape of ‘Call Shotgun’, ‘What Do Girls Want’ and ‘Hunny Is This What Adults Do?’

Next month sees her go on a massive UK and Europe tour with Hippo Campus. The tour starts on Valentine’s Day. In Lauran Hibberd, you may have your new musical love.

2019 is here all of a sudden! A big year ahead, but what are your main goals for the next 12 months?

I would like to release an EP (which I am working on now.)  I am also so excited to go on tour and hit Europe; I’ve never played outside of this country before.

You’ve gained some great traction recently with Huw Stephens at Radio 1. Is it quite surreal to hear your stuff on the airwaves?

It is weird! I was lucky enough to get BBC Introducing Track of The Week back in the summer [ Call Shotgun] and some guy called up Radio 1 to say how he went to school with me and I was sat there thinking “this is the weirdest thing ever”.

Your style of music has an air of pop-punk to it. Is there any influence from Weezer and early Blink 182?

For sure! Weezer is a huge influence of mine and Blink are such a guilty pleasure.  I am a pop songwriter but I lean towards rock, which makes it work for me. I used to have singing lessons and I was always told: “you’re doing this wrong,” In the end, I just sacked them off and started doing my own thing; which has worked in my favour.

Is there anything that triggers you picking up a pen or guitar?

I am always writing stuff down when I am out and about or singing into my phone. Whenever I have spare time, I go through those notes and voice recordings and eventually I will find something that I can work with.

Is there a mood that you aspire your fans to associate with your music?

What I have out at the moment is pretty upbeat, so I am yet to put something out that shows my other side. But, a lot of people have said they listen to Call Shotgun in the car or when they’re running which is hilarious. What Do Girls Want had a good reaction too, a lot of girls messaged me to say they connected with it, which was cool?

Will there be a headline Lauran Hibberd tour this year?

We are looking at doing one for sure! Hopefully in the next few months. I would love that!

This year, the sky is the limit…what is the ultimate goal for 2019?

I would love to have written an album this year, just to have it in the locker, as I love writing. I would also love to tour with Phoebe Bridgers or someone ironically huge like Adele – imagine that!  I just want to keep building and sell out some headline shows.

But the sky is the limit? I would like to be a millionaire. I have always wanted to own a waterpark – that is what I would do! I could start one on the Isle of Wight [where Lauran lives].
