Formed earlier this year, Ayrshire’s Refuge Island are an indie-punk band with swagger and a balls-in-your-face attitude that demands attention.
The four-piece have dropped explosive their debut single ‘Above Board’. Written and recorded in a day, the track emits a captivating rage with singer/songwriter Wullie O reflective of a man possessed. The expulsion of energy clocks in at just over two minutes and with the discharge of frantic guitar playing ensuring the debut offering penetrates the airwaves in a manner that slaps any dreamy listener awake.
The well-shot video captures the band’s live presence with front-man Wullie reminiscent of a hunter stalking his prey as he wrestles with the mic. It’s raw, almost violent and entertaining as hell.
Certainly a name to watch out for, Refuge Island are currently poking their way onto the Glasgow live scene and look set to build a fan base over the coming months. Speaking about their debut, front-man Wullie alludes: “It’s a modern love story man with a twist but really take what you want from it, because to be honest, I didn’t set out to write about anything in particular. It comes across as a in your face love story and there ain’t a lot of that about.”
