Ones To Watch: Shiny Darkly

If you’ve been unsuccessful in looking for today’s answer to Joy Division or The Jesus And Mary Chain, you’ve clearly just been looking in the wrong places. The right place, that is, being an old underground air-raid shelter in Copenhagen… Of course. Already giving us Iceage and Lower, Copenhagen’s latest offering comes in the form of three young pale men, dressed in black and armed with guitars and synths: Shiny Darkly.

Shiny Darkly (Kristoffer Bech (vocals and guitar), Mads Lassen (drums) and Oliver Matthew Volz (bass guitar)) truly explore the dark side of Scandinavia; with their latest (very NSFW) video filmed in a Copenhagen sex club, Shiny Darkly have endless amounts of both sex appeal and an unshakable element of horror in their music. With their looming guitars and synths, and noisy post-punk atmosphere, Shiny Darkly are truly reviving the ’80s new wave/post-punk sound and injecting it whole-heartedly into the world, like a sort of bad dream that you can’t help but become a little bit obsessed with.

Having already played festivals such as SxSW, CMW, Roskilde Festival, Iceland Airwaves, Reeperbahn, Eurosonic, Liverpool Sound City and The Great Escape, and with their album set for UK release, Shiny Darkly are the latest vampirical punks set to take over the new music scene.

Little Earth is released June 8 via Crunchy Frog. And you can catch Shiny Darkly live at London’s The Waiting Room next Wednesday, June 10.
