REVIEW: Studio 68! Live At The 100 Club

The hallowed walls of London’s 100 Club have showcased some of the hottest acts the world has seen, those releasing material recorded from the sweatbox include London mod kings The Action and Birmingham’s finest The Move, continuing in this hallowed vein returning mod rock powerhouse champions Studio 68! are back with a stellar new limited edition 7” single released by iconic Detour Records.

The live date at the 100 club for Studio 68! was the bands return to the live circuit and activity as a band after a double decade departure following tales of high debauchery, but after releases by Detour records of the bands back catalogue fortunately the quartet saw sense to reunite and on this evidence they have lost none of their firepower.

All 4 tracks are rhythm and blues excursions of the highest order, the sort of thing you would expect to hear from Daltrey, Entwistle, Moon and Townshend at the height of their Who Sell Out period. First track Rolling With The Punches delves into the Realms Of Deep Purple with a added splash of Me You And Us Too Small Faces, whilst you click clunk your seatbelt in for the ride Double Decker Bus whisks you off around a sharp bend of Apples and Oranges Pink Floyd mixed with One More Heartache Artwoods.

South Of The River sounds aka to Janice Joplin mixing with Big Brother and the Holding Company, guest vocalist Dani Turner belts out a lyric like the very best rock soul singers, final track The Other Me diverts straight back to The Who with firm echoes of Townshends finest rambunctious aggression whilst Paul Moody soul voice does little but bring to your mind Marriott and Reg King at their finest. As you can see I’ve mixed in a lot of nudges towards the finest bands of the 60’s but Studio 68! have their own twist on things, which is refreshing to hear. This band obviously mean it and have a lot more to give. Here’s looking forward to the next chapter of these cool cats.
