TRACK: Ben Howard – ‘A Boat To An Island On The Wall’

A lot has happened since 2014; topically, typically and technologically. It’s a different world since Ben Howard’s last studio album. I Forget Where We Were summarised the ideologies of many of his youthful fanbase. The subsequent arena tour, and his top spot on the UK Album Chart personified the success of the album.

His career has catalysed with over a million sales and introduced the indie music scene to a new sub-genre: indie-folk was the ambient new twist on generic indie music which sank into the hearts of many a millennial. Now, the announcement – seemingly out of no where, as we hadn’t heard from Howard since his 2015 stint on Glastonbury’s Other Stage – that he’s has been working on his third album ‘Noonday Dream’. Set for release on 1st June 2018, the album is accompanied by a five-date U.K. tour following the album launch, including two dates at London’s Hammersmith Apollo.

You can’t help but question: four years on, can he adapt to the changes of the modern-day music scene Sure, we’ve had plenty of male singer-songwriters in lately – think George Ezra, James Bay, Yellow Days and William Joseph Cook – with similarly melancholic, dreamy lyric-heavy tracks themed upon modern forlorn experiences, but none have met the raw, electronic edge of Howard.

Based on the prelude track, the pre-released seven-minute-long ‘A Boat To An Island On The Wall’, we have an updated and refreshed take on Howard. Still with his classic wistful vocals but with a bass-heavy undertone and the sense that he’s become even more electronically inclined with his music. The single tempts the thought of exciting things to come and even edgier side to Howard and his wears. Let’s see shall we.
