TRACK OF THE WEEK // CHARLIE FLOYD HITS A HIGH WITH TRIUMPHANT NEW SINGLE ‘2000’ – A FIVE-STAR ANTHEM FROM THE NORTH EAST’S MOST PROMISING VOICE

If there’s one artist who’s quietly—and now unmistakably—taking 2025 by storm, it’s Charlie Floyd. With a brace of brilliant singles already under his belt (Do It Again and Take It Or Leave It), Floyd’s latest release, ‘2000’, is his most affecting, anthemic, and fully realised work yet. And it’s not just good—it’s a bona fide five-star moment.

Out July 18, ‘2000’ is the sound of an artist stepping into his power. The Newcastle native channels personal reflection into widescreen indie-pop glory, delivering a track that’s as emotionally resonant as it is euphoric. It’s self-produced, self-assured, and effortlessly compelling.

AN ERA-DEFINING GEM

Built around a message of defiance and drive, 2000 brims with meaning. Lyrically, it’s Floyd’s most introspective outing yet—born from a deeply personal moment, but crafted to connect universally. There’s bite in the delivery and clarity in the message: don’t sit still, don’t settle, and above all, don’t lose sight of yourself.

Floyd’s lyric “I was born in the 2000s and I’ll die in the 2000s” offers a compelling hook—not just sonically but philosophically. It’s a declaration of purpose, a way of grounding ambition within a defined, lived experience. That line alone places Floyd among the sharpest young songwriters currently emerging in the UK.

And then there’s the sound. As the first track entirely produced by Floyd himself, ‘2000’ bursts with raw talent and inventive confidence. He plays with light and dark—glossy hooks meet gritty textures, the beat pulses beneath layers of synth shimmer, and each element serves the song’s greater emotional arc.

This isn’t just DIY—it’s done right. Floyd has carved a lane entirely his own, drawing from indie, pop, and electronic influences without ever feeling derivative. As he puts it: “Whether or not something is considered technically correct, if it sounds good and how you want it to, then it’s completely up to the audience.” That fearless creative instinct is the heart of what makes ‘2000’ so special.

THE EP – A MAJOR MILESTONE

Serving as the final single before the arrival of his debut EP on August 20, ‘2000’ is the perfect bridge between the raw energy of his earlier tracks and the more mature, cohesive world Floyd is beginning to shape. The EP, built on nearly a decade of songwriting, promises to be as eclectic as it is cohesive.

With tracks ranging from teenage compositions to last-minute studio gems, it captures the energy of summer and the emotional depth of growing up publicly. Floyd describes the EP as a culmination of “9 years of songwriting, 23 years of life experiences and 20 odd years of musical influence.” On the strength of this single, we believe him.

HOMETOWN MAGIC: LIVE AT THE ENGINE ROOM – JULY 25

If you want to see an artist on the rise at their most personal and experimental, then The Engine Room in North Shields on July 25 is the place to be. Just ten minutes from where Floyd grew up, the intimate venue is the perfect setting to see him up close and unfiltered.

This isn’t a standard set—it’s a bold, one-man-band performance built around a custom rig of synths, loops, and transitional compositions. It’s Floyd’s sonic world, brought to life in real-time. Expect immersive moments, stripped-back surprises, and the kind of magic you only get from a true hometown crowd.

Also on the bill are Robyn McLeod—a powerful songwriter with Rushbonds pedigree—and Thomas Seagrave, Floyd’s longtime musical brother and former Baltic bandmate, now stepping out solo for the very first time.

BACKED BY BBC INTRODUCING AND BIGGER THINGS TO COME

Already championed by BBC Introducing, Floyd’s trajectory continues upward. With high-profile sets at Warwick Castle, Hardwick, and RNRC under to come, and a second EP already mapped out, it’s clear this isn’t a passing moment—it’s a movement.

Floyd is building something far more than a collection of songs. As he says: “It’s about the bigger image—the graphics, the covers, the artwork, the instruments, the production, the influences. If people resonate and relate to that, then I’m a happy man.”

We’re not just resonating—we’re all in. It’s another five out of five from us, Charlie!

‘2000’ is out NOW on all major streaming platforms. Don’t miss it.
