ALBUM: Fyfe ‘Control’

Rating:

After the successful release of the Solace EP, Fyfe releases his debut full-length record, Control. The album is flooded with electronic pop sounds (see Childish Gambino) that make it an easy listen to the ear, and an equally strong debut album.

Previously known as ‘David’s Lyre’, Fyfe compels the listener into a magical journey of electronic pop with elements of psychedelic and grunge sounds – a real treat for fans of his previous work. Control isn’t just a typical electronic album that you expect to hear in a Manchester nightclub, the album shows experimentation with a mix of genres complied into the eleven track listing.

Take ‘Holding On’, the powerful lyrics and smooth flow show a different side to electronic music, a darker side and one that isn’t often that great. Hats off to Fyfe for tackling this side of electronic music and showing that yes, you can enjoy the different aspects of it without having to grab a glow stick and wear your mum’s old raving leotard. The opening to third track ‘Solace’ has a psychedelic twist and upbeat kick – once again a complete twist on the usual electronic music that we are use to. (Think Kurt Vile.)

The most admiring thing about this album is that, I’m sat here and I’m struggling to even think of skipping the song halfway through. Not because it’s my job to listen to every track religiously, but because this album is just enjoyable for any music fan. The last track on the album, ‘Control’, propels you into the trippy electronic sound. And there you have it. A whole range of different electronic sounds mixed into this collection. Control is not only a brilliant debut album, but an experiment that has gone successfully well.

Control is out now via Believe Recordings.
