Discovery of the Week: Clay

Clay are all about the mystery. I’m not sure if it’s on purpose or not, but the internet seems to be a vast chasm where information about these guys should be, well that’s what I’ve found anyway. What I can say is that they’re from Leeds, they’ve got one song on Soundcloud and there is not a shortage of mysterious black and white photos of the four young lads. Feel free to check out the photos at your leisure (twitter: @clayweare), but I’m here to talk about the music.

Clay’s debut track, ‘Sun Dance’, dropped onto Soundcloud a few months ago, and ever since I stumbled onto it the other day, it’s been on constant repeat. With a dramatic organ intro that strangely reminds me of Iggy Azalea’s ‘Work’, ‘Sun Dance’ immediately flies away from this parallel with cool, sweet male vocals and some funky clicks to really get the uptempo music moving. Incorporating soul vibes into a fresh new indie pop track works perfectly, along with the superb lyrics sung with that subtle Yorkshire twang – “while I was dreaming you were wasting time”. It’s just a start from Clay, but it’s a great one and I’m super excited to see what they come up with next, I’ll be waiting.

Keep your eyes and ears peeled for more from these lads from Leeds…
