Acid Jazz Records are excited to announce the return to the label of one of their most beloved bands of recent years, New Street Adventure.

Fronted by singer-songwriter and guitarist Nick Corbin, who was raised by a soul music obsessed father, New Street Adventure had one of the best frontmen and songwriters Acid Jazz have ever worked with.

Signed by the label in 2013, New Street Adventure’s debut album, No Hard Feelings was released in 2014 and followed in 2017 by Stubborn Sons. Thereafter the band took an extended break and Corbin decided to venture out as a solo artist.

Founding his own label, ‘Big AC Records’ (named after the best-known song from New Street Adventure’s debut album), with his wife Sophie Heath, Corbin released a series of excellent singles and, in 2020, a debut solo album, Sweet Escape, which garnered acclaim from Q Magazine, BBC 6 Music’s Craig Charles and BBC Radio London’s Robert Elms.

The label also released singles by emerging artists on the exciting UK soul scene, including Carmy Love and Abi Farrell. As well as writing with these two artists, in recent years Corbin has also collaborated with the likes of Laville, Lack of Afro and Emma Noble.

After a six-year hiatus, New Street Adventure toured the UK in Autumn 2024 to mark the 10-year anniversary of their debut LP, No Hard Feelings. The experience, coupled with being asked by Aaron Frazer to accompany him on his 2024 European tour, providing guitar and background vocals, inspired Corbin to return to the studio and record a new New Street Adventure album.

What Kind Of World? is the most ambitious album the group have recorded to date, encompassing Corbin’s deep love and obsession with soul music. Throughout What Kind Of World? there are nods to such influential soul artists as Syl Johnson and Curtis Mayfield (on the moody, blues-influenced title track), the crossover soul of Odyssey and Leroy Hutson (the uptempo ‘Get You Back’), contemporary group Gabriels (northern soul-inflected ‘A Taste Of Love’), Bill Withers (‘What A Woman’ – the first of many songs to feature Terry Lewis of Mama’s Gun on lead guitar), and the timely inspiration of Sly & The Family Stone (‘Everyone’s A Music Maker’).

Corbin’s wisdom and maturity as an artist – not to mention a father – shines on songs such as the slow groove of low-rider track ‘Busy With My Baby’, the ballad ‘The Next Chapter’, ‘Too Good Together’ and, in keeping with the band’s Stubborn Sons album, an acoustic album closer – ‘When I See You With Him’.

The maturity is also on show throughout the album’s themes. The early experiences of fatherhood have had a profound effect on Corbin’s writing, as he addresses concerns about the world his children will grow up in, but also focuses on the joy an expanding family brings and the lens through which he now sees those closest to him.

Produced and arranged by Corbin, What Kind Of World? was recorded at The Cube in London. He was joined by an array of outstanding musicians, including original New Street guitarist Billy Farr and backing vocalist Carmy Love, and Florian Bel (bass), Sahil Batra (Wurlitzer and synths), Carl Hudson (Hammond), Michael Hussain (drums), Mama’s Gun’s Terry Lewis (guitar), Pete Whitfield (violin), a horn section comprising of Dominic Glover (trumpets, trombone) and Andrew Ross (saxophones – and flute and piccolo).

This incredibly talented ensemble have created a luscious, cotemporary soul album.

What Kind Of World? is all the more an enthralling listen due to mix engineer and Colemine Records affiliate Rafferty Swink’s exceptional mix of the album (Swink was recommended to Corbin by Aaron Frazer).
