ONES TO WATCH: Dream Nails

Modern Riot Grrrls – rejoice! If you’re still spinning Bikini Kill and Sleater Kinney’s timeless records, or if you’re looking for entry into one of music’s most important and iconic movements, you should take the time to listen to new feminist punk band, Dream Nails.

Gigslutz New Music Editor, Mari, has previously featured the band on the ‘Get In Her Ears’ Gigslutz Girls’ New Music Show (Hoxton Radio), but we think their exploits warrant a solo feature too.

The four-piece have branded themselves “feminist punk witches from hell”, and recently celebrated the release of their debut EP, DIY, at The Shacklewell Arms in Dalston, giving away free sex toys and a handmade fanzine with each EP purchase – the epitome of satisfaction.

Dream Nails are as much about music as they are about activism, and they recently played a gig for ‘Loud Women’, alongside other bands to raise money for Women’s Aid (a charity which supports victims of domestic violence). Their debut four-track debut EP includes songs ‘DIY’, ‘Nt Abt U’, ’Bully Girl’, and ‘Deep Heat’, which includes the defiant lyric “nobody cares if your dick is on fire”. They’re using humour and humanity to create compelling, riotous music.

Vocalist, Janey, explained: “DIY is about never asking permission, about being self-sufficient and about believing in yourself. In a capitalist patriarchy where women are told to be dependent, DIY is about developing your own strength. Instead of waiting for someone to tell you you’re good enough, tell yourself!” – answer Dream Nails’ call to arms, download their excellent EP, and get out there and support them, ASAP.

DIY is available to download via bandcamp now and catch Dream Nails live in session on the Gigslutz Girls’ New Music Show on 16 June!
